BRAINTREE, Mass. — New video captured the moment a runaway Red Line train rolled through Braintree station as passengers waited on the platform.
On May 30, subway personnel attempting to uncouple the last two cars from a six-car train due to an air conditioning problem ran into an issue and decided to recouple them but the other four cars suddenly detached and rolled backwards, according to transit officials.
The four-line train eventually came to a stop on its own. There were no reported injuries and nothing was damaged.
A Red Line supervisor remains on administrative suspension pending the outcome of an investigation.
The Federal Transit Administration last week issued a series of special directives ordering the MBTA to correct major concerns, citing a lack of a safety culture at the T-- in part because there seems to be no “guidebook” on safety.
Paul Kincaid, of the FTA, called the runaway train incident “serious.”
The MBTA’s growing backlog of maintenance issues and inadequate staffing problems were also flagged for change.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
