‘Loud explosion’: Video captures moment lightning strikes Boston building, destroying chimney

BOSTON — A lightning strike sent bricks flying off the roof of a brownstone in Boston’s South End on Thursday, damaging at least one car parked below, Boston Fire officials said.

Isabelle Boughner was recording a Snapchat video with her friends inside 277 Mass Ave when she inadvertently captured the moment the lightning bolt hit her building.

“All of a sudden [I heard] bam! I looked out and the tree was red,” Isabelle’s friend said.

No one was hurt. Bricks and debris from the building were scattered along the sidewalk Thursday night. A white SUV parked along Mass Ave suffered significant damage to its hood.

“It was a very bright flash and an instant loud explosion. So I jumped out of my seat. It really scared the hell out of me,” neighbor Michael Borum said.

District Fire Chief Robert Counihan confirmed the lightning strike and said the building also suffered water damage from a burst pipe.

“Luckily no one happened to be walking by and no one was injured, Counihan said. “The only damage right now is to the property and obviously the cars on the street.”
