BOSTON — Boston U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy announced this week that he is stepping down, effective Friday, January 17.

It’s not a complete surprise, as president-elect Donald Trump is expected to nominate his own choice for U.S. Attorney in Boston.

But before he steps aside, Levy held a round table at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston, where he talked about some of the biggest cases in the area in recent years.

As Boston U.S. Attorney for nearly two years, Joshua Levy oversaw prosecutions including the arrest of former Stoughton Police Officer Matthew Farwell for the death of 23-year-old Sandra Birchmore, the arrest of Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson for allegedly running a kickback scheme at city hall, and the arrest of four Massachusetts State Police troopers who allegedly sold commercial drivers licenses to people who were not qualified.

Levy would not comment on his office’s investigation of the Norfolk County DA’s handling of the Karen Read case.

Last month, President Biden commuted the death sentences of nearly forty federal death row inmates.

One notable exception was Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

Boston 25 News asked Levy if his office played a role in preventing Tsarnaev’s sentence from being commuted.

He said, “My personal opinion doesn’t matter, no one gives me pardon power, commutation power, so this decision the White House makes, they draw the lines where they decide to draw the lines and my personal opinion really isn’t relevant.”

Levy did say he was involved in discussions about the Tsarnaev decision and he’s not privy to share the details of that.

Right now, Tsarnaev remains on death row while his lawyers continue to use the federal court system to get him a lesser sentence.

Joshua Levy is the 58th U.S. Attorney in Boston.

His last day in office is just three days before Donald Trump takes the oath of office as President of the United States
