‘I am devastated for them’: Two people hospitalized after explosion inside Holliston home

HOLLISTON, Mass. — Crews responded to a home in Holliston Monday afternoon for a reported explosion.

Holliston Police say the explosion occurred around 3:55 p.m. inside a home on Westfield Drive. Arriving officers found two men, ages 59 and 61, in the front yard with extensive burns on their bodies, according to officials.

“I saw that their injuries were severe, and I just wanted to be helpful, so they didn’t get hurt further,” said Kristen Mahoney, a neighbor. “It was very scary, and I am a little rattled still by the whole situation.”

They were transported to an area hospital via medical helicopter and then transported to Boston trauma hospitals. Their condition is unknown at this time.

Responding crews say there was a light smoke condition in the home but no visible flames.

A preliminary report indicated the homeowner and an electrician were injured after an explosion in the basement. The two were allegedly troubleshooting oil-burning equipment which was not working properly after Friday’s electrical storm.

“Lightning storms can cause electrical surges across many neighborhoods,” Fire Chief Michael Cassidy said. If a home is damaged in an electrical surge, it’s imperative homeowners contact an electrician to inspect for any damaged wires or fire hazards that may have been created.

Electricity was turned off to the dwelling and as a precaution, as was the propane tank on the outside of the hose. After town inspectional services gave the “all clear,” the property was secured.

“We are grateful that both individuals received immediate care from the police, our fire and EMS personnel, and our mutual aid partners, in accordance with pre-hospital treatment protocols,” Chief Cassidy said. “The availability of air medical transport, and nearby burn centers verified by the American Burn Association and the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma will all hopefully lead to positive outcomes for these individuals. They are very fortunate, but it will be a long recovery period for them.”

Another neighbor, Julie Hermann, voiced her concern for the duo. “I just hope they are ok. I heard they have been airlifted so worry about their well-being.”

“I am devastated for them,” Fran Gorman, a family friend said. “They are awesome, they are wonderful people.”

The incident remains under investigation. Eversource, as well as fire crews from Ashland and Medway assisted at the scene.
