Two geese in Norfolk have tested positive for bird flu.

According to Norfolk Massachusetts Animal Control and Shelter, last Tuesday two geese were found in not great condition. One was found at River’s Edge and the other on Highland Lake.

After testing the geese through Tufts Wildlife, both birds tested positive for Avian Flu.

Norfolk Animal Control is reminding residents to do the following:

  • If you have backyard fowl please make sure that they are safe from visiting birds (primarily swans, ducks, geese, and raptors at this time). This includes mitigating free-range behaviors and making adjustments to their pen areas to eliminate unwanted bird contact.
  • Do not intervene and help sick or deceased birds. All birds that are sick need to be handled with PPE and removed by those who are versed in handling animals with possible zoonotic diseases. We appreciate your cooperation in this. If you see an animal that needs intervention please call your local ACO and they will handle it.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has declared that the current, national HPAI outbreak is primarily an animal health issue that poses relatively low risk to the general public.

Birds in Plymouth and Amherst have also tested positive for bird flu this month.
