BOSTON — The world didn’t get much more than a glimpse of Darius Powell and Daiquan Miller, as they were arraigned on weapons charges Tuesday in Dorchester District Court. The pair were arrested Monday night near the scene of a fatal shooting on Devon Street.

The victim has since been identified by authorities as 37-year-old Keith Cousin of Bayonne, New Jersey.

Boston Police said they spotted Powell and Miller go into an alley and attempted to question them about the shooting, which took place at about 10:30 p.m.

“Once those individuals noticed the police officers they fled from the scene,” said Assistant District Attorney Samuel Jones. “They were apprehended very quickly.”

Police then searched the area for evidence.

“They found in a plastic shopping bag some dark clothing as well as two firearms,” Jones said. “Both individuals do not have a license to carry firearms in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.”

While the men are not currently facing murder charges, relatives of Cousin’s gathered in the courtroom for the arraignment — perhaps anticipating those charges will follow. The judge ordered Powell and Miller to be detained until next Tuesday when a ‘58A’ dangerousness hearing will be held.

The judge also ordered the Commonwealth to share the victim’s name with a defense attorney — but otherwise sealed his identity.

“I’m just sad,” said Cousin’s aunt. “I’m just saddened by his loss. Anybody that knows the words of prayer just keep my family in prayer. We’re just hurting right now beyond words.”

The aunt described her nephew as a nice kid.

Then she said this: “He just had a baby today. Today his baby was born.”

That baby, a boy, would have been his first child.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
