FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — A CSX train heading into the CP Framingham Yard derailed six railcars and one locomotive near Route 135 and Waverly Street on Sunday morning.

According to CSX, five hazardous materials cars carrying CO2 were among the derailed segments of the convoy. The five hazardous materials cars, the locomotive and the car containing nonhazardous materials all remained upright and intact, according to CSX.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:10 a.m. Sunday morning.

Police tweeted that all commuters heading Eastbound will be diverted at Cedar Street and all Westbound commuters will be diverted at Concord Street near Route 126.

The Freight train blocked the road and caused a commuter rail backup as well.

“CSX is working closely with the Framingham Police and other first responders and has re-railed the locomotive,” the company said in a statement. “The safety of the community and everyone on site is our top priority as we work to clear the remaining cars and re-rail the track.”

Those in the area when the derailment occurred had reactions ranging from frustration to intrigue.

“It’s pretty rare for me as a train enthusiast, it’s pretty cool to see action on this line,” said Jacob Koppel, who came out to see the derailment.

“A half a mile to go around here it’s taking like 45 minutes,” said Avinash Raj, who works at Old Station Wine and Spirits.

Raj says their liquor store was only doing a quarter of the business they usually see on Sundays because of all the road closures.

“Obviously I feel bad because there’s no customers of the business going on and I think some of the other businesses I see have closed because of this,” said Raj.

Officials originally estimated that Waverly Road would reopen at 10 p.m. Sunday night but then pushed the estimated time frame back to 2:30 a.m. on Monday morning.

Keolis was notified about the incident. The cause is under investigation.
