‘A tough season’: Patriots fans react to Jerod Mayo’s last game as head coach

FOXBORO, Mass. — Most Patriots fans support Robert Kraft’s decision to part ways with Head Coach Jerod Mayo right after the last game of the season.

“I don’t think he was quite ready for a head coaching job,” said Celia Knight, a Patriots fan.

Some expected the coaching change to come a bit later, but they agreed with the move.

“I think it’s definitely best for the team that he’s gone, I like Mayo I met him a number of years ago, he’s a really great guy, but he’s not, he wasn’t in a position to win this year,” said Clayton Witham, a Patriots fan.

“I understand the decision, but I think they really need to part ways with the front office staff, that is our problem, they didn’t have enough talent on the field and that put Mayo in a tough spot, so he was in a bit of a losing spot,” said Reed Newton, a Patriots fan.

It was a disappointing 4-13 season for Coach Mayo’s debut as head coach.

The Patriots did win their last game at Gillette Stadium Sunday against the Buffalo Bills, but that win was also a disappointment to many fans.

“When he was trying to win today, I thought the chances went down that he would be our coach because if he was going to be our coach for next year, he would want to lose this game,” said Witham.

Most Pats fans were hoping for a loss Sunday to secure the first overall draft pick this year.

Now they just hope there will be a brighter future under a new head coach.

“If they’re going to move on from him, I hope they already have Vrabel or somebody else already wrapped up,” said Newton. “This was obviously a tough season, but we had Drake Maye all season there’s hope for the future, but he needs help.”

No word yet on who the next Patriots head coach will be, and after Sunday’s win, the Patriots will now have the fourth overall pick in the NFL draft.
