‘Today is a good day’: Students to perform song in honor of late Dedham teacher

DEDHAM, Mass. — In March, beloved Dedham Elementary School teacher Christine Stec tragically passed away from pancreatic cancer after an almost year long fight. Now, students are planning to perform a new song celebrating her life.

Christine grew up in Dedham and taught at Oakdale for most of her 25-year long career. She was adored by her students and family, including her two children, Lexi and Dylan.

When she was diagnosed in May 2022, friends, family, and members of her community quickly organized into “Team Christine” to support her in any way possible. Even as she fought cancer, she stayed positive, continued to do the things she loved, like dancing, and adopted a motto: “It’s a good day to have a good day”.

“Christine wasn’t your average person; she was truly an angel on earth,” writes William Stec, her husband, “She gave and received compassion and love that some can only hope for.”

Now, inspired by her motto, Oakdale Elementary students will be performing “Today is a good day”, written by a music teacher in Christine’s honor. They will sing at the Dedham School Committee meeting on June 21st.
