BOSTON — A widespread power outage impacted thousands of Eversource customers in Boston amid the ongoing heat emergency.
Eversource said about 7,500 customers were without power in Dorchester on Sunday. As of Monday morning, about 1,500 customers remained without power in the area of South Boston.
“With the region continuing to experience extreme heat today, our system operators are closely monitoring the system and using remote switching capabilities to ease demand or load in local areas when possible,” a spokesperson for Eversource said in a statement. “We continue to perform system maintenance and make repairs to the electric system as necessary to ensure we continue to provide safe, reliable service.”
The company also advised customers to take steps like avoiding the use of large appliances during peak hours and adjusting the thermostat on air conditioners a few degrees higher in order to reduce energy usage and save money.
Eversource conducted a planned outage overnight Saturday to repair part of the electric system. That outage impacted an estimated 825 customers.
