Massachusetts is home to one of the most unique “common” last names in the United States, according to new findings.
Ancestry.com, the world’s largest online family resource website, recently published a list of three most common last names in all 50 states.
Smith, Johnson, Miller, Jones, Williams, and Anderson make up most of the most common surnames, Ancestry found.
But there are still regional differences. For instance, Massachusetts, with its large Irish population, is the only state that has Sullivan in its top three.
The website also found that Brown is a more common last name on the East Coast versus the Northwest, where Anderson is prevalent.
These are the most common last names in New England:
- Massachusetts - Smith, Johnson, Sullivan
- New Hampshire - Smith, Brown, Johnson
- Maine - Smith, Brown, Johnson
- Vermont - Smith, Brown, Johnson
- Connecticut - Smith, Johnson, Brown
- Rhode Island - Smith, Brown, Johnson
