ANDOVER, Mass. — An 18-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries when he crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 93 in Andover late Sunday night, authorities said.

Troopers responding to a report of a crash on the northbound side of the highway shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday found a male driver from Methuen in need of emergency medical treatment, according to Massachusetts State Police.

The victim, whose name hasn’t been released, was flown to a Boston hospital.

The highway was shut down for hours to allow for the helicopter to land and an investigation to take place.

The scene of the crash was cleared shortly before 1 a.m.

A preliminary investigation suggested that the victim was driving at a high rate of speed before slamming into the back of the tractor-trailer, according to state police.

The crash remains under investigation.
