Taunton Pop Warner football player suffers medical emergency during practice

TAUNTON, Mass — A Taunton Pop Warner football player suffered a medical emergency during a practice on Thursday.

Taunton Pop Warner officials say the athlete who suffered the emergency is doing well and is in great care of medical professionals.

“While we never want to have to experience an incident like this, the training and certifications that our coaches and staff members have taken to prepare for the season ensured that everyone had the right tools and plans in place,” officials said in a statement.

On Thursday, August 24, staff, volunteers, the Taunton Fire Department, and Paramedics responded quickly during practice at Hopewell Park.

“It’s situations like these that we prepare for and hope we never have to execute but shows the extreme importance of these certifications.”

An off-duty Berkeley firefighter and paramedic rushed out of the stands to perform CPR on the player. The player was taken to Morton Hospital before being flown to Mass General Hospital.

Pop Warner officials thank everyone who was involved in the incident.

“We ask that the public afford this family the privacy that they deserve as they focus on what’s most important at this moment,” the statement ended with.
