Falmouth man in custody after firing shots outside MassDOT facility in Middleborough

MIDDLEBOROUGH, Mass. — A 55-year-old Falmouth man is facing several charges after opening fire outside the Massachusetts Department of Transportation facility in Middleborough.

Police were called to the public works depot at 201 West Grove Street just after 9 a.m. Friday for reports of shots fired.

Police say Raymond Gibson fired four to five shots outside of the facility near the road.

Police say no one was injured but two vehicles were hit with gunfire.

Gibson then fled on foot into the woods, sparking a manhunt.

At 11:30 a.m., police say they saw Gibson poke his head up while lying on the ground in the woods near where the shots were fired. He was ordered to come out of the woods where he was placed under arrest. Police located a .357 revolver near where he was lying.

Police say Gibson had a valid license to carry and the gun seized was registered in his name. His license has since been suspended.

Police say they don’t believe any individuals or groups were targeting in the incident but the motive remains under investigation.

Gibson will be arraigned Friday on charges of disturbing the peace, discharging a firearm within 500-feet of a building, discharging a firearm near a highway, and two counts of malicious destruction to a motor vehicle.

MassDOT announced that Rt. 28 north and southbound between Anderson Avenue and West Street in Middleborough are currently closed in both directions due to the ongoing incident.

Editor’s Note: The original report from police said the shooting occurred inside Middleborough’s MassDOT, but upon further investigation, it has been made clear the shooting happened outside the MassDOT facility.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
