Sumner Tunnel closed for weekend as restoration work continues, MassDOT says

BOSTON — The Sumner Tunnel is closed for the weekend, as restoration work in the tunnel continues, state transportation officials said.

The tunnel will be closed until 5 a.m. on Monday. Motorists are advised to “Plan your detour.”

The Sumner Tunnel is undergoing a restoration that began in the spring of 2022. This work requires the tunnel to be closed to traffic periodically, state transportation officials said.

Built in the 1930s, the Sumner Tunnel (Route 1A South) is the first traffic tunnel in Massachusetts and takes vehicles from Logan Airport to Boston/Interstate-93, according to the state.
