BOSTON — Newly-released video shows the moment two Green Line trains collided into each other on the night of June 14, causing long delays in service.
According to the MBTA, the trains “unintentionally coupled” near the Government Center platform, suspending service for over an hour between Park Street and Government Center stations. There were no reports of any injuries that night, but passengers said they were escorted off the train and had to walk through the tunnel back towards the platform.
A frustrated employee can be seen trying to motion to the operator to stop the train before the collision occurs. MBTA staff then quickly evacuate the two trains and begin assessing the damage.
The crash came just two days before the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) issued a series of special directives, ordering the MBTA to correct four major safety concerns.
Just last week, smoke from an overheated engine on a commuter rail train at North Station lead to long delays.
“Safety is our number one priority and must be the primary focus for the MBTA and the DPU,” FTA Administrator Nuria Fernandez said in a statement on June 16. “Every transit passenger deserves a safe ride. Every transit worker deserves a safe workplace.”
