BOSTON, Mass. — The Boston Teachers Union has identified Khelmon Bethel as the educator who was shot in the parking lot of TechBoston Academy on Tuesday evening.
Bethel and a student are both in stable condition and are expected to make a full recovery.
In a statement, the Boston Teachers Union said, “our thoughts are with both Khelmon Bethel, BTU educator at TechBoston, as well as the TechBoston student who were injured last night by gunfire while on a fan bus to a basketball game. This act of violence is unacceptable, and when we learned of the incident yesterday, we joined the Mayor and Superintendent to show support for the staff and school community last night and this morning.”
The investigation is still ongoing. No arrests have been made at this time.
“Just in the past two days police in Boston have seized 16 illegal guns, and then we have a child and teacher shot in front of a school in what can only be described as community terror,” Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in a statement. His office will soon announce an initiative to address gun violence.
“Everyone deserves to feel safe at school or at school-sponsored events,” the BTU said, “we are working with the district to ensure that the students, families and staff at TechBoston have supportive resources to navigate this awful situation and that there is a solid a plan to address safety both at the school and in the larger community moving forward.”
