MASHPEE, Mass. — A school on Cape Cod was evacuated after a fire broke out in the building on Monday morning, officials said.
All students and staff at Mashpee Middle-High School at 500 Old Barnstable Road in Mashpee were safely evacuated after a “fire incident,” Mashpee Public Schools announced in a Facebook post just after 9:30 a.m.
“We want to inform you that there has been a fire incident at Mashpee Middle High School,” MPS wrote in the post. “All students and staff have been safely evacuated from the building, and everyone is accounted for.”
Local fire and police departments responded to the school and are “handling the situation.”
Video from the scene showed firefighters on the school’s roof, where smoke and flames were visible.
Mashpee Schools Superintendent David Thompson stressed that there was no immediate danger to any students or staff.
In a message notifying parents that students would be dismissed for the day, Thompson called the incident an “unusual circumstance.”
“We appreciate your patience as we navigate this unusual circumstance,” Thompson wrote. “We received word that we cannot reoccupy the Middle-High School today.”
Multiple buses were also spotted driving students away from the property to Quashnet School, where dismissals were planned.
“Due to the number of students and the available space at Quashnet, we will dismiss bus students first to clear the parking lots. Then, car pickup will be facilitated,” Thompson wrote.
There were no additional details immediately available.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
