Steamship Authority drops mask mandate on its Cape Cod and island ferries

WOODS HOLE, Mass. — Ferries to and from Cape Cod and the islands are now mask-free, effective immediately.

The Steamship Authority joins the wave of other local and federal agencies dropping mandates, following a federal court decision out of Florida earlier this week.

“The Steamship Authority will no longer be requiring masks to be worn at its terminals or on its ferries Masks are also no longer required on its shuttle buses in accordance with a similar directive issued Tuesday by the Federal Transit Administration,” said

The Steamship Authority says customers will still see some mask signage on its ferries, buses, and at its terminals while it updates those materials.

The SSA services passengers and car ferry service to and from Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket.

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to recommend that people wear masks in indoor public transportation settings to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, and we encourage and support any passengers or employees who choose to do so,” said the SSA in a statement to its website.
