State trooper transported after police cruiser struck on I-495 in Lowell

LOWELL — A Massachusetts State Police trooper was transported to the hospital after their cruise was rear-ended on Route 495 near exit 91 in Lowell late Thursday night.

MSP told Boston 25 the accident occurred at approximately 11:39 p.m. The trooper was inside his fully-marked cruiser while investigating a crash on I-495 when his vehicle was rear-ended by a 2007 Honda Accord.

The cruiser sustained moderate rear damage, and the trooper was transported to Lowell General Hospital for minor injuries but was released, police say.

The driver, John Cerrato, 25, of Chelsae, who struck the cruiser, was arrested. Cerrato was taken into custody and is now facing charges for operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to move over for an emergency vehicle, speeding, and marked lanes violation.

Cerrato was held at Massachusetts State Police-Andover barracks overnight before he was transported to Lowell District Court for his arrangement.
