SAUGUS, Mass. — Massachusetts State Police and the Essex County District Attorney’s office are investigating the discovery of human remains in Saugus.

An individual walking their dog found the remains in the woods behind David Drive Sunday morning, the Essex County District Attorney’s office said.

Neighbors who live on the dead-end street were shocked to hear about it.

“Stuff like that doesn’t happen on David Drive,” said Carol Fee.

Investigators spent the day gathering evidence from the woods, and the human remains were transported to the Medical Examiner’s office to learn the cause of death and a possible identity of the person who died.

“I think it’s absolutely crazy,” said Joe LoRusso, who lives nearby. “Nothing like that happens around here nothing, it’s a very quiet neighborhood.”

The remains have been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, where a cause of death will be determined.

Officials say there is no known risk to the public.

An investigation is active and ongoing.
