Police: 93-year-old woman in an adult daycare program drowns during trip to Boston beach

BOSTON — An investigation is underway after a 93-year-old woman drowned while swimming in the water off a beach in Boston on Monday.

Troopers responding to a report of a person in distress in Castle Island’s Pleasure Bay around 12 p.m. learned a client of an adult daycare program had inadvertently swam into deeper water during a supervised trip to the beach, according to Massachusetts State Police.

When the woman realized the depth of the water she was in, she panicked and yelled for help before becoming submerged, state police said.

Lifeguards and friends of the woman pulled her to shore, where they immediately began performing CPR. She was later transported to Boston Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

“I was out about 50 yards just swimming,” said Paul McGrath who grew up in Southie. “I noticed that all the lifeguards and they were doing chest compressions.”

State Police confirmed the woman was at the beach with an adult daycare group called Second Home Adult Health Care in Watertown. Boston 25 reached out for comment but got no reply.

McGrath says the water was calm and the beach was silent until this devastating incident Monday morning.

“It was eerily quiet because everyone was seeing what the situation was,” said McGrath.

We reached out to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Executive Office of Elder Affairs to see if the incident was reported to them and if the adult day care is under investigation.
