BOSTON — On Friday, The Baker-Polito Administration is scheduled to announce new summer programs for students who have struggled with hybrid and remote learning models during the pandemic, according to a spokesperson.
On April first, Governor Baker referenced the need for a robust summer program this year, and the plan has been created.
“If we don’t have one, shame on us because by that point in time, the vast majority of the population that wants to get vaccinated will be,” Baker said in April.
The new programs scheduled to be announced by the Governor, and state education officials on Friday at Canton’s Galvin Middle School call for $70 million in funding for school districts as well as community organizations for summer learning and recreational programs, according to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Some of the programs include the launch of Acceleration Academies that would give students the chance to learn and build skills working on one subject in smaller groups, with teachers.
The academies include early literacy programs and math programs.
There will also be matching summer school grants for school districts to offer four to six-week in-person programs for academic and recreational activities, according to a spokesperson with DESE.
