SOMERVILLE, Mass. — Happening later Thursday morning, a 26-year-old Somerville man will face a judge, accused of murdering his roommate.
The shooting happened early Wednesday evening inside a two-family home on Ware Street.
According to Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan, the victim, 22-year-old Robert Favreau of Cambridge had been living with the suspect, 26-year-old Edson Moreno of Somerville for a couple months. She says Wednesday, the two allegedly got into an argument that escalated. Around 5:45 p.m., Ryan says Moreno shot Favreau inside their Ware Street home. When police got there, according to Ryan, they found Moreno standing outside holding a handgun. They ordered him to put down the gun and he was arrested.
Ryan said one reason police were able to get to the scene so quickly was because of a neighbor who was hiding in a closet called 911 right after it happened.
“She was able to give them a fairly detailed account,” said Ryan. “Officers were clearly prepared already had emergency personnel dispatched to provide assistance immediately to Mr. Favreau and expected and knew there was a gun at the scene, so were prepared when they arrived and saw the defendant allegedly with a handgun outside.”
Police had a section of the neighborhood taped off for a few hours Wednesday night as they investigated. Several residents came outside to see what was going on. Right now, it’s unclear what the victim and suspect were arguing about that ultimately led to the deadly shooting.
This shooting comes after a 16-year-old girl was shot while she was walking her dog following the Fourth of July. Ryan was asked about the uptick in violence in the city.
“That is something I think everyone is concerned about especially as we head into summer and clearly, we are always looking at various incidents to see if there are patterns and connections,” said Ryan.
Moreno has been charged with armed assault to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury and possession of a firearm. Ryan said as the investigation continues, more charges are expected.
