HYANNIS, Mass. — A smoke situation on a Steamship Authority vessel sailing from Nantucket to Hyannis led to an inspection of the boat and a trip cancellation on Monday morning, officials said.

At approximately 10:30 a.m., crew members on board the Katama discovered smoke in the bow thruster compartment of the vessel as it was completing its morning trip from Nantucket, Sean Driscoll, a spokesman for the Woods Hole, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority in Falmouth, said in a statement.

No injuries were reported. There were three passengers on board at the time, Driscoll said.

“Crew members immediately initiated firefighting procedures and contacted the Hyannis Fire Department for assistance,” Driscoll said. “As the vessel arrived in Hyannis and unloaded, it was met by Hyannis firefighters, who investigated the situation.”

No firefighting measures were required, and the Hyannis Fire Department left the scene within approximately one hour, he said.

A preliminary investigation found that the smoke was coming from the exhaust lagging, or insulation, Driscoll said.

The vessel’s 10:45 a.m. round trip was cancelled while the vessel is being inspected.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
