Slippery conditions catch drivers by surprise after first snowfall in Massachusetts

Boston – The first snow of the season in the Boston area didn’t bring much accumulation but did create icy conditions that caught some drivers by surprise.

MassDOT has more than 950 pieces of equipment deployed across the state.

Slippery roads are a concern heading into Monday morning’s commute with pavement temperatures below in all regions of the state.

Dozens of serious accidents were reported in the first few hours of the snowfall on Sunday.

The Newton Fire Department told Boston 25 News that an iced-over bridge at Route 9 and Chestnut Street led to an accident involving up to 15 cars.

“It’s the first snowstorm of the year. I think it caught everyone unaware,” said Deputy Chief Eric Fricke with the Newton Fire Department. “Fortunately, most of the damage you see is to the cars and not the drivers.”

Deputy Chief Fricke said three people were transported from the scene with minor injuries and six vehicles had to be towed from scene.

“In the 20 minutes I was on the drive home, I think I passed maybe three accidents,” said driver Dana Sobel. “That’s the hard part about the first snowfall. I feel like people haven’t driven in snow in a while.”

Public works crews in Boston and other cities and towns are also addressing slick sidewalks ahead of the morning rush on Monday.

Boston is utilizing 130 pieces of equipment across the city.
