‘She’s my world’: Victim of Falmouth hit-and-run asks for prayers for critically injured wife

BOSTON — A man recovering from a hit-and-run in Falmouth last week is asking for prayers for his critically injured wife.

Dave, 65, and Sandy Fitch, 60, who have been married for 32 years and retired to Falmouth four years ago, were leaving a restaurant on Dave’s birthday last Monday night. They were hand-in-hand in the crosswalk when police say David Eldredge, Jr., 33, struck the couple with his motorcycle before fleeing into nearby woods.

“It was a horrific scene. I could not see where Sandy was, but I heard her crying,” Dave said. “She was crushed. So, her bones and her organs are failing, and she is barely alive.”

As Sandy is on life support at a New Bedford hospital, Dave has undergone three surgeries at a Boston hospital to save his leg. Dave has feeling in that leg, and doctors are pleased with his progress.

Over the past nine days, Dave has drawn strength from his friends’ and family members’ support and prayers.

“I’m asking to please continue to pray for Sandy. She is in desperate need of prayer,” an emotional Dave said. “I want her to continue to live. She’s only 60 years old, and she’s my world.”

Eldredge turned himself in after an arrest warrant was issued. He was charged with driving with a suspended license, two counts of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, speeding, reckless driving, a crosswalk violation and other violations.

Dave Fitch is focused not on the crime but on his and his wife’s recoveries.

“My hope is that my wife survives and I survive. Everything else pales in comparison, including this person,” he said. “It’s something that happens to everybody else. And then it happens to you, and your whole world changes.”

A friend has set up a GoFundMe account to help the Fitches recover without the burden of medical bills.
