Sesame Street welcomes first Filipino character

SESAME STREET- — A new neighbor just moved onto Sesame Street.

T.J., the long-running show’s first Filipino character, was introduced on the show just in time for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

Filipino-American animator Bobby Pontillas based the new character on his lifelong friend’s two children, Max and Matteo.

Pontillas shared on Instagram he and Sesame Workshop’s Creative Director of Character Design collaborated on the character.

puppeteer and performer Yinan Shentu is the voice for T.J.

The 54-year-old television staple introduced Korean American character Ji Young in 2021.
