Salem firefighters battle flames and wind in overnight fire

SALEM, Mass. — People living inside a multi-family home in Salem were sent running as flames tore through their building overnight.

This home on Broadway is about two blocks away from Salem Fire Station Five. A person on the first floor ran down the street and alerted firefighters by knocking on the station’s door. When crews arrived on scene, they ran in and tried to put out the flames, but the deputy chief says the fire got in the walls and became too intense. The firefighters all got out and were able to put the fire out. The deputy chief says the windy conditions really beat them up and made this fire so difficult.

“The wind was tough, that was the big factor,” said Deputy Chief John Payne. “The cold, we deal with, but the wind was the factor. I got lucky here with this house to the right of it. We thought we were going to have a problem. We got it to a point where the fire was knocked down.”

Firefighters contained the flames to the one home. There were three people living in the home, one on each floor and they all made it out. No firefighters were injured.

The deputy chief said he doesn’t know where the fire started. Investigators have been called to determine the cause.
