Safety measures called for after at least 8 guns found in Boston schools this year

BOSTON — As students return to the classroom this week, a group of parents, clergy and community leaders want Mayor Michelle Wu to take action after more than a half dozen guns have been found in Boston schools.

Boston Safety of our Schools claims the city faces a school safety crisis after at least eight guns have been confiscated so far this school year. The group claims in one incident, a loaded gun was discovered in an elementary school. SOS is calling on the mayor and city leaders to do something about it before a tragedy happens.

There have been a few times when schools have had to go into safe mode after a gun was found inside a student’s backpack—including at Excel High School in February and Excel Academy late last year.

SOS tells the Boston Herald it wants to see metal detectors in schools and also cameras placed at the front entrances and common areas. The group is also asking for a police presence in schools, including plain-clothed officers. And it also believes early intervention programs need to be instituted.

But Mayor Wu might not be on board with all of those requests. Even during her campaign, Wu has said she doesn’t want police officers in schools. A spokesperson for the mayor issued a statement to the Boston Herald saying safety is the administration’s top priority. The city is taking an intensive approach to end and prevent violence in schools. We’ve reached out to her office for further comment.
