‘Safest major city in country’: Boston Mayor Wu, city’s top cop to detail falling crime rates

BOSTON — City officials are touting Boston as the “safest major city in the country” after crime rates fell in 2024, new data showed.

Mayor Michelle Wu, Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox, and Senior Advisor for Community Safety Isaac Yablo are slated to discuss a drop in crime statistics from the past year and highlight strategies that they say have made the city safer.

Wu, Cox, and Yablo are expected to make the announcement during a 12:30 p.m. event at Boston Police Headquarters.

The rate of homicide, rape, robbery, auto theft, larceny from a motor vehicle, and home burglary all fell in 2024 compared to the prior year, according to crime data released by the city on Thursday.

  • 32 homicides in 2023 vs. 24 homicides in 2024
  • 210 attempted rape and attempted rape cases in 2023 vs. 162 attempted rape and attempted rape cases in 2024
  • 869 reported robberies and attempted robberies in 2023 vs. 807 reported robberies and attempted robberies in 2024

The number of fatal shootings in the city also dropped from 25 in 2023 to 19 so far in 2024.

But crime numbers are also rising in a few areas, the data showed.

Jumps in 2024 included 866 reported domestic assaults (6% increase), 1,645 reported non-domestic aggravated assaults (slight uptick), 355 commercial burglaries (6.5% increase), and 8,325 “other” larcenies (7.5% increase).
