Roxbury vigil held on what would have been Breonna Taylor’s 27th birthday

BOSTON — June 5th would have been Breonna Taylor’s 27th birthday. A vigil and rally to remember her on this day was held in Roxbury at Nubian Square.

Back in March in Louisville, Kentucky police armed with a no-knock warrant forced their way into her home. Taylor who was an EMT was fatally shot eight times.

Keturah Brewster was one of the organizers of the vigil.

“As a black woman, any of us could be susceptible to that and that is what deeply resonated with me,” Brewster said.

Nate Mclean-Nichols also helped organize this vigil.

“It just goes to show that no matter where we’re at, no matter who we are, no matter what we look like, if we’re a black body our lives are not valued,” he said.

Hundreds listened to speakers and in the shadow of Boston’s B-2 police station they also demanded police accountability.

“I’m hoping that we continue to move the conversation forward,” Brewster said.

The crowd was a mix of ages and races but spoke with one voice to make a point without violence.

One local college student who declined to give her name said: “We saw it advertised on the Black Lives Matter page and obviously we think that’s an important aspect.”

Among the crowd was Congressman Joe Kennedy, who said he is moved by protests like this across the country.

“What we’ve seen transpire in our country over the course of the past two weeks has been a community in anguish, pain and crying out for recognition,” Kennedy said.

Protesters hope their message and that of so many others recently was heard loud and clear by politicians, police and every American.
