RMV extends grace period for certain expired inspection stickers

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles announced it will be extending the grace period for certain expired inspection stickers through the end of May.

On Tuesday, the Mass. RMV says for stickers that expire in March and April 2021 will be granted a grace period to get a new sticker until May 31, 2021. This all comes following a major nationwide systems outage affecting the vendor, Applus Technologies, used by the Mass. Registry of Motor Vehicles. It stopped the process of vehicle inspections from being performed.

PREVIOUS: No vehicle inspections offered at RMV through Sunday

The Mass. RMV added that any newly purchased vehicles registered on or after Tuesday, March 31, 2021, should be granted until April 30, 2021, to obtain an inspection. Typically, newly purchased vehicles must be inspected within seven days of registration.

Officials told Boston 25 customers who recently had an inspection sticker rejection and are in the 60-day free retest window are afforded one extra day for each day Applus’s system was down. But they added that they should plan to facilitate their inspection as soon as possible once the system is restored.
