BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox are finalizing a trade for All-Star left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
The 25-year-old starting pitcher threw a career-high 146.0 innings with a 3.58 ERA with the Chicago White Sox in 2024, his first full season as a starter at the major league level. Crochet struck out 209 batters while only unintentionally walking 33 batters as he earned the first All-Star appearance of his career.
Boston is reportedly sending back 22-year-old catching prospect Kyle Teel as the centerpiece in the package to complete the deal, according to the Boston Globe’s Julian McWilliams.
Outfielder Braden Montgomery, infielder Chase Meidroth and right-hander Wikelman Gonzalez are also heading to Chicago in the deal, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
Crochet led all regular starting pitchers with a strikeout rate of 35.1% in 2024. Crochet relies heavily on his blistering fastball, averaging 97.2 MPH.
Crochet heads to Boston with two full years of team control remaining on his contract and is arbitration-eligible in 2025.
Boston’s acquisition comes after the club missed out on free-agent pitcher Max Fried who agreed to an eight-year, $218 million contract with the New York Yankees on Tuesday.
