Report: Former Red Sox player Julio Lugo dies at the age of 45

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC — Former Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo has died in the Dominican Republic, according to a report by ESPN’s Enrique Rojas.

Rojas says he spoke with Lugo’s family, who indicated Lugo’s death appears to be related to a heart attack.

Lugo was 45 years old. He played for the Red Sox for three seasons, including the Red Sox World Series Championship team in 2007.

Lugo would have turned 46 years old Tuesday. His sister told ESPN that Lugo appears to have suffered the heart attack after leaving a gym in the Dominican Republic.

The Red Sox posted a tribute to Lugo sending the team’s thoughts and love to his family.
