BOSTON — A renowned Chinese kidney transplant surgeon was sentenced to federal prison on Monday for his role in a steroid-money laundering scheme, the U.S. Attorney said.

Zhendi Wang, 44, of Wuhan, the People’s Republic of China, was sentenced by District Court Judge Allison Burroughs to 20 months in prison, to be followed by one year of supervised release, Acting U.S. Attorney Josh Levy said in a statement.

Wang, a surgeon at Wuhan Union Hospital, pleaded guilty to operating an unlicensed money transmitting business in October.

Three others connected to a related money laundering conspiracy remain at large, Levy said.

Wang opened bank accounts in Massachusetts. Between 2020 and 2023, Wang received $1.2 million in his bank accounts from a family member, and that money came from sales from the family member’s online steroids business, prosecutors said.

Wang then repaid equivalent amounts to his family member in Chinese currency, prosecutors said. Wang did not have the appropriate license to operate a money transmitting business.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
