BOSTON — Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale underwent successful surgery on his left pinkie, the team said Monday.
Sale broke the finger on his pitching hand during Sunday’s game against the New York Yankees. He was hit by a 106.7-mph liner from Aaron Hicks, which then went into right field for an RBI single that gave the Yankees a 3-0 lead.
New York went on to win the game 13-2.
“One look at this finger, I knew (it was broken) immediately,” Sale told the Associated Press. “That feeling of just that kind of cold water rushing through your body when something like that happens. I soon as I hit the ground, I looked down, the finger is gone.”
Sale was making his second start since returning from a fractured rib. There is no timetable yet for his return, but Red Sox manager Alex Cora hasn’t ruled it out this season.
The left-hander’s surgery was performed at the Newton-Wellesley Outpatient Surgery Center.
