BOSTON — Boston Red Sox ace pitcher Chris Sale will miss the remainder of the season after he suffered a broken wrist in a bicycle crash over the weekend, the team announced Tuesday.
The lanky left-hander underwent right wrist surgery at the Newton-Wellesley Outpatient Surgery Center in Wellesley on Monday, according to the Red Sox.
Sale suffered his injury on Saturday. The cause of the crash wasn’t immediately clear.
“He will miss the remainder of the 2022 season but is expected to be ready for the start of Spring Training in 2023,” the team said in a statement.
In July, Sale underwent surgery on his left pinkie after he was struck by a liner in a game against the New York Yankees.
Sale appeared in just two games this season because he spent months rehabbing from a stress fracture in his rib cage that he suffered in February. He pitched in only nine games in 2021 due to Tommy John surgery in 2020.
The 33-year-old has an opt-out clause in his contract after the 2022 season.
