Investigation underway after three elderly people found stabbed to death inside Newton home

NEWTON, Mass — Newton police are investigating after three elderly people were found stabbed to death in their home Sunday morning.

Officers found the three deceased individuals in a home in the Nonantum neighborhood on Broadway around 10:14 a.m. after a neighbor went to check on them after they didn’t come to church Sunday morning, Middlesex District Attorney’s Marian Ryan said. Police found the three victims with apparent stab wounds and blunt trauma.

At a press conference Sunday night, Ryan said that there were signs of forced entry into the home. She told media members that investigators from the DA’s office and Massachusetts State Police have been actively investigating the crime all Sunday.

Investigators also found signs of a possible break-in about half a mile away on Brookside Avenue but it is unclear if it is related, Ryan said.

Ryan asked the public to remain vigilant, check their doors and windows, and immediately report any suspicious activity to police as investigators searched for the killer or killers.

Neighbors told Boston 25 News a couple in their 70s and one of their mothers, a woman in her 90s, lived in the house.

The married couple was celebrating their 50th anniversary this weekend and were supposed to attend mass at Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Newton on Sunday morning to renew their vows.

The portion of Broadway between Churchill and Linwood Avenues was closed late into Sunday night while officials scoured the large crime scene.

Residents in the Nonantum and Newtonville areas were also asked to check any camera on their property in case it captured something that may be helpful for police.

“I am concerned with such a violent crime taking place where this individual or individuals are still at large”, Newton Police Chief John Carmichael said.

Newton police have increased their presence in the area and are asking everyone to lock their doors and windows.

The victim’s identities have not been released.
