Police searching for burglar who broke into Tewksbury store through air ducts

TEWKSBURY, Mass. — Tewksbury police are asking for the public’s help locating a suspect who broke into a Kay’s Hallmark store at the end of December.

Police responded to the store around 5:25 a.m. on Monday, December 30, after a back door was left wide open.

Officers found several ceiling tiles missing near the entrance and money missing from the cash registers.

Investigators believe the suspect entered the building through the roof and traveled down the air ducts into the store.

Chintan Gandhi, manager at the shop, told us they’ve never seen anything like this in their roughly 30 years in business.

“Someone knew where to go,” he told Boston 25 Thursday. “My AC unit was unscrewed and the suspect went through the duct tapes, cut a hole halfway through the store, and shimmied across a pole to come down an exit sign.”

There was still visible damage to the ceiling Thursday night.

Gandhi believes the man got onto the roof by a dumpers or pole in the back. He also claims the suspect disabled his alarm system.

He finished, “Someone who did it had great strength and agility.”

Surveillance video from inside the store shows the suspect as a man wearing a black hoodie, black pants, black sneakers, two-toned gray work gloves, and a red ski mask.

Tewsksbury police also shared video of a man matching the suspect’s description walking on Shawsheen Road.

Sgt. Ryan Hunt and other Tewksbury police officers walked into the aftermath.

He explained, “There were some ceiling tiles that were missing towards the front of the store… I don’t think anyone thought that place would be targeted.”

Officers were not able to share exactly how much money was missing from the story.
