NEWTON, Mass. — One person has life-threatening injuries and another person has been arrested after a shooting broke out at a Pro-Israel rally in Newton Thursday night.
The person was shot during a pro-Israeli demonstration at the corner of Washington and Harvard streets, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said in a press conference.
Ryan detailed that the victim approached the group in the rally and tackled one of the demonstrators, beginning a scuffle on the ground.
Scott Hayes, 47, of Framingham then fired his weapon, seriously wounding the victim. Hayes had full legal possession of the gun, Ryan said.
Officials said there will be an increased number of police patrols around houses of worship in the coming days.
Multiple police cruisers, officers, police tape and evidence markers could be seen on the ground at the intersection.
A small amount of debris and what appears to be medical supplies could also be seen strewn about the street corner.
Hayes is expected to be arraigned in Newton District Court on Friday.
