Police investigated ammunition found in hallway of Shrewsbury’s Oak Middle School

SHREWSBURY, Mass. — The police department responded to Oak Middle School in Shrewsbury Friday morning where a round of ammunition was found in the hallway of the school. Shrewsbury and Massachusetts State Police did a search of the entire building and did not find anything else, and no one was hurt.

Officers did remain at the school for the rest of the day.

Oak Middle School principal Dr. Jones and Superintendent of Shrewsbury public schools Dr. Sawyer released a joint statement of the detailed events that occurred Friday afternoon.

Both said the police determined it was a live bullet found which resulted in a heightened police presence and K-9 unit search. Students were asked to place their backpacks in hallways, but nothing was found.

“The search did not find anything and did not result in any cause of concern,” said Dr. Jones. “The school has no information that would lead us to believe that any threat exists.”

The students remained in their classrooms while the police conducted the search which ended at around 11:15 a.m. Jones said he reassured students they were safe.

Jones and Sawyer both said, “We are providing this information with you to reassure families that we responded to the discovery of the bullet by following out safety protocols to ensure that the school environment was safe.”
