Police investigating after MBTA bus struck 81-year-old man in Winthrop

Police are investigating a crash in Winthrop’s Metcalf Square where an elderly man suffered severe injuries when he was struck by a transit bus, authorities said.

The crash happened at about 3 p.m. when the bus was turning from Pauline Street onto Herman Street.

Transit police told Boston 25 News that the victim, an 81-year-old man, suffered a severe leg injury when he was struck by the bus. He was transported to a local hospital.

The bus involved in the crash is operated by Paul Revere Transportation, which contracts buses through the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.

Video from the scene showed a bus with an MBTA logo on its side surrounded by police tape.

Paul Revere Transportation said in a statement, “the operator is current with all MBTA safety training guidelines and was not involved in any major incidents during seven years of service. He will remain on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.”
