MALDEN, Mass. — An emaciated, sick dog was found abandoned and in “terrible condition” in a popular recreation area in Malden, prompting an investigation by police and the Animal Rescue League.

The 2-pound Chihuahua was found huddled in some bushes along the East Coast Greenway bike trail July 25. The person who found the dog named him Bailey and brought him to the nearby Malden Police Department.

The ARL says the dog “likely wound not have survived had he not been found.”

Bailey suffered severe fur loss and his body is covered in scabs. The ARL says he is being treated for Giardia, a parasitic illness that may further indicate that Bailey was previously living in unsanitary conditions.

When he arrived for medical treatment, Bailey was described as “malodorous.”

The dog is currently receiving veterinary care, including medicated baths and a refeeding plan to ensure he safely gains weight. He is not currently available for adoption.

Police are seeking the public’s help for information about the abandonment and will hold a press conference on Wednesday to discuss his current condition.
