Police find no threat after two active shooter alarms in Norwell

NORWELL, Mass. — A massive crowd of police officers and law enforcement swarmed a business area in Norwell Wednesday afternoon after an employee seems to have accidentally tripped an active shooter alert, according to police.

Norwell police officers responded to the area of 120 Longwater Drive shortly before 1:45 p.m. after someone inside the building reported a message had begun to play over the building’s intercom system that there was an active shooting in the building.

Officers searched the building and did not find any shooter or threat.

“At this time, it is suspected that an employee accidentally selected the code silver alert in the preprogrammed system that altered the building and Police Department of an active shooter,” the Norwell police department shared in a statement.

At 2:04 p.m., a second caller who knew about the prior shooting report also reported an active shooter down the road in the area of 104 Longwater Drive, according to Norwell police.

That building was immediately locked down while officers searched the premises. No threat was found.

Schools in the area were notified and placed in lockdown as police responded.

Norwell police say both threats are considered unfounded and there is no threat to the community at this time.
