STOUGHTON, Mass. — Police confirmed that a three-car crash at the intersection of Plain and West Streets Wednesday night was the finale to a road rage incident -- one that began at a 7-11 in Canton.
Officers responding to a report of a crash at the intersection of Plain and West streets around 9:15 p.m. learned that one vehicle had an occupant who had been shot, according to the Stoughton Police Department.
A gunshot was fired from a black sedan and hit the driver of a white SUV, police said. A third vehicle unrelated to the road rage incident was involved in the crash.
A total of five people were taken to the hospital, including the gunshot victim. They have all since been treated and released.
“There was an argument that took place at a convenience store in Canton,” said Stoughton Deputy Chief Brian Holmes. “There was a road rage incident that ensued following the argument. It culminated in the discharge of a firearm from one vehicle to another -- and resulted in a motor vehicle crash.”
What police have yet to determine is where the gun went off.
“We’re very certain at this point in time that the shooting did not take place in Canton,” Holmes said.
That means it happened somewhere along the four-mile stretch of roadway between Canton Center and the crash site. Police are aware of surveillance video in which audible gunshots can be heard -- but do not have that footage in possession.
As of Thursday afternoon, no arrests had been made in the incident.
“We’re asking Stoughton’s help or anybody along the way that might have some video surveillance in a vehicle camera system, in a Ring system, a business that has a camera -- to help us out,” Holmes said. “We can’t do this job without you.”
A witnesses Boston 25 spoke with did not have any surveillance video. But they had impressions of the crash and the moments before.
“I heard the crash and I came out to see what happened because we knew it was bad,” said Finny Avelar, who lives in the neighborhood. “It was a big crash. It sounded like a bomb went off.”
Jose Morales was in his bedroom around the time of the crash. He said there was no doubt that what he saw was road rage.
“I saw two cars driving by really fast,” Morales said. “One of them was going probably upwards of 50 miles per hour. They were honking and everything. One of them had the hazard lights on and it seemed like one was trying to stop the other.”
Neither Avelar nor Morales heard gunshots.
