SCITUATE, Mass. — Scituate Police are investigating a disturbing incident at Museum Beach after a mock “tombstone” appears to have targeted the School Director of Diversity, Education, and Inclusion, jamele adams.
Photos of the incident are described as rocks lined up in the shape of a grave, with a makeshift “tombstone” reading “In loving memory of…” followed by the misspelled name of adams, according to the Superintendent of Scituate Public Schools, the Town Administrator, and the Select Board.
“We are horrified and dismayed that anyone would engage in such vile behavior. As a community, we cannot claim to be inclusive and welcoming if such incidents continue to occur here,” said members of Scituate Together for Representation, Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity.
Not only has adams been a dedicated Scituate Public School employee, but he also has lent his expertise and knowledge to the wider community through organizing and facilitating conversations with STRIDE in order to reverse racism and bigotry.
“When hate shows up, show up with more love,” adams said on Twitter.

adams spells his name with lowercase letters to signal that he is a piece in life’s grand landscape for us all, according to his biography.
Recipient of many awards and recognitions for his work in higher education, with young scholars interested in law and creative writing workshops, adams is also a nationally celebrated poet.
“Incidents like this one demonstrate just how entrenched racism and bigotry are on the South Shore and in Scituate,” according to the organization. “We are heartened that the Scituate Police Department is treating this incident with the seriousness it deserves and are grateful that the Selectboard and the School Committee have jointly condemned the actions of this person/s, but we must do more as a community.”
