BOSTON — 4 teens were in a speeding car that crashed near UMass Boston, leaving 2 dead and 2 injured, police say.
According to Massachusetts State Police and Boston EMS, a call came in for a vehicle rollover on the northbound (inbound) side on Morrissey Boulevard near the campus around 3:15 a.m.
One of the victims who died was identified as a 14-year-old boy from Dorchester. The second boy who died was a 15-year-old from Mattapan.
One of the two other boys who was hurt, a 17-year-old from Roslindale. is said to be in “grave condition” according to state police. The fourth victim, a 15-year-old boy from Dorchester, is expected to survive.
No names have been released as of Friday because state police say victims aged 17 and under are considered juveniles.
Police say a firearm was found in the crashed vehicle.
Preliminary investigation shows the males were traveling at a high rate of speed in a 2013 Hyundai Accent. The Huydena was towed to a State Police facility for further investigation.
“The investigation into the facts and circumstances of the incident, including the actions of the four juveniles, and the sequence of events, prior to the crash, remains active,” according to a statement from state police. “That investigation is being led by State Police detectives with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the State Police-South Boston Barracks.”
Video from the scene showed several police cruisers blocking off the area as detectives and EMS officials worked.
There were no other cars were involved in the crash.
The cause of the rollover is under investigation.
Portions of Morrissey Boulevard were closed but as of 7:30 a.m., all lanes reopened.
