Plymouth man facing charges after barricading himself in house with 7-year-old boy

A Plymouth man is facing charges after a stabbing and subsequent standoff on Samoset St. Saturday night.

According to Plymouth police, 50-year-old Herman Smith, of Plymouth, is facing several felony charges including assault to murder while armed, child endangerment, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (knife) and resisting arrest.

His arrest followed a lengthy operation that included law enforcement from all levels of government and a SWAT team rescuing a seven-year-old boy from a barricaded home.

According to a spokesperson from the Plymouth Police Department, officers responded to Samoset Street at approximately 5:43 p.m. for a reported stabbing.

After arriving at the scene, officers found the victim suffering from serious, but not life-threatening injuries. They were rushed to South Shore Hospital but have since been released.

Police said Smith then barricaded himself inside a home with a seven-year-old boy inside.

“We surrounded the house, we had contact with the boy through a window,” said Plymouth Police Captain Jason Higgins. “The boy was not allowed to leave, and the suspect refused all commands to exit the residence or to let the boy leave.”

Eventually, Higgins said officers were able to rescue the boy through a second-story window. SWAT teams then entered, swept the house, and found Smith hiding in a closet on the third floor.

Police said Smith knows the stabbing victim and the child but they could not comment further on their relationship.

Aside from the original stabbing victim, police said no one was injured during the operation and extraction.

The entire operation took more than five and a half hours.

Officials from the local, state, and federal levels of law enforcement are assisting in the investigation.

Police said Smith was held on $250,000 bail and is set to be arraigned Monday in Plymouth District Court.
