FITCHBURG, Mass — Firefighters are being credited with rescuing multiple residents who became trapped in a burning home in Fitchburg on Thursday morning.
Crews responding to a report of a blaze on Plymouth Street found heavy smoke and fire in the basement of a multi-family home, according to the Fitchburg Fire Department.
Three people on the top floor of the home were pulled out of a smoke-filled room, while two residents on the second floor were ushered to safety.
“The guys made an aggressive interior attack. They did a phenomenal job,” Fitchburg Deputy Fire Chief Patrick Roy said. “There were people trapped on the top floors. The guys moved them out without injury...The guys did a great job knocking the fire down.”
In total, 12 people were displaced by the fire. They are now being assisted by the Red Cross.
The fire most likely started in the basement and started extending up throughout the home, Roy said.
No serious injuries have been reported, but one person was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
